Just days after seeing its long winning streak come to an end, the Shorter softball team put a stop to Lee University’s surge.

Shorter earned a non-conference split with Lee on Wednesday at Alto Park, falling in the opener, 11-4, before taking the nightcap, 7-3.

The Shorter victory in Game 2 saddled Lee with its first loss of the season after 18 straight wins, and pushed the Lady Hawks to 19-3.

Jackie Castaneda and Bre Johnson hit back-to-back homers for Shorter in the nightcap victory.

Castaneda hit a three-run shot to put Shorter up 3-0 in the first inning and Johnson followed with a solo shot. The homer was Castaneda’s first of the season. Johnson, who also homered in the first game, now has six on the season, which ties her for the team lead.

Johnson, the former Calhoun star, added an RBI single in the second inning and Kendall Johnson later added an RBI double that made it 6-1. Shorter’s final run of the game came on Felicia Morris’ RBI groundout.

Maddie Bray got the win in the circle, tossing 6 1-3 innings and striking out six while allowing just three runs on five hits. Christina Ezell picked up the save by recording the final two outs.

Shorter returns to GSC action this weekend with a pair of road doubleheaders with West Florida and Valdosta State on Saturday and Sunday, March 16 and 17.

BERRY BASEBALL

After rallying to grab the lead in the eighth inning, Berry suffered a 15-12 loss in 11 innings to Maryville.

Berry fell to 8-8 overall. Maryville improved to 9-9.

Trailing by an 11-10 after seven, Berry had two runners on base in the eighth when pinch-hitter Ben Jernigan produced an infield single. Two runs came home after a throwing error on Maryville shortstop Nick Dean. Maryville scored three runs off Carter Reese (0-1) in the 11th.

Former Rome High star Stephen Gaylor paced Berry with three hits and three RBIs, and Austin Neely had two hits.

Berry hosts Southern Athletic Association foe Millsaps on Friday.

SHORTER WOMEN’S LACROSSE

The Lady Hawks got up early and held on late to pick up the 13-9 road win at Tennessee Wesleyan.

The Lady Hawks took an 8-1 lead into the intermission, helped by a goal from Rachel Skinner after 1:36, and followed by three consecutive goals from Avery Armstrong.

Bethany Fevella, Aiste Pranciliauskaite, Shelby Beverly, and Katie Ott all found the back of the net while Shorter (6-2) built the advantage in the first half.

Tennessee Wesleyan recorded the first goal of the second half behind the effort of Rachel Matlock.

Pranciliauskaite, Armstrong, and Beverly scored three goals within 1:12 to run the lead to 11-2.

Armstrong topped all scorers with four goals and now has 12 scores in the last two games, while a trio of Lady Hawks — Pranciliauskaite, Beverly, and Skinner — scored a pair of goals apiece.

SHORTER MEN’S LACROSSE

Despite an early lead, Shorter fell to Mars Hill, 16-8.

Shorter’s J.R. Willers made 18 saves while facing 51 shots.

Mars Hill held the slight 35-33 advantage in ground balls, but capitalized off of 34 Hawk turnovers.

Shorter will return to Ben Brady Field on Thursday, hosting Notre Dame de Namur.

Equestrian head coach Margaret Knight has announced the team that will be representing Berry College at the IHSA Western Semifinals at Morehead State University on March 22 and 23.
