Description:
The Rome Art Coterie meeting on Tuesday, November 13 will be held at Berry College in The Science Building, Biology Room 111. Our program will be on sculpting and will be presented by Coterie member Becky Davis.
Becky describes herself: I began sculpting after I was given a lump of microcrystalline wax at Stephens College in Missouri. When that lump was cast into a piece of bronze, I had found my calling. No more backgrounds, I could focus on the main figure. Heaven!
Years later after a BFA at the Univ. of Georgia and an MED there also, I taught art to kindergarten through middle school students for a number of years. When I quit teaching, my husband and I decided that if we could learn how to cast metal, then people would beat a path to our door to purchase the resulting sculptures. Such an auspicious beginning. Then followed years of experimentation and research. The result was Ironwood Studio- a fully functioning bronze foundry. We cast for over twenty years and taught several people about bronze casting including Mark Hopkins who ultimately built a foundry in Rome for a time.
Through the years, we cast hundreds of pieces which reside in most of the United States and several foreign countries.
