ATHENS, Ala. (AP) — Five Alabama state senators are trying to keep the state's four low-cost spay and neuter clinics open.

The senators sent a letter last week to the Alabama State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners. The lawmakers asked the board not to vote on a rule change that would essentially shutter the clinics. The News Courier reports that Sen. Bill Holtzclaw made the Oct. 4 letter public on Tuesday.

The letter is signed by Holtzclaw, Sen. Del Marsh, Sen. Cam Ward, Sen. Slade Blackwell and Sen. Jerry Fielding.

The state Veterinary Medical Association, which represents 750 members or about 75 percent of the state's veterinarians, has also written a letter to the board asking for action to be delayed until the legislative session.
