The Floyd County Commission will hold a public hearing Tuesday on a proposed apartment complex behind Midway Park.
Lamar Ashley said he is planning eight quadriplexes — a total of 32 units — on 12 acres of undeveloped land off Midway Park Road. Ashley is in talks with county departments regarding water and sewer service for the property.
The Rome-Floyd County Planning Commission unanimously recommended approval of rezoning the suburban-residential tract for multifamily residential use.
Assistant County Manager Blaine Williams noted that zoning approval is a first step. Any construction also would have to meet state and local health, safety, building and development codes, he said.
The county commission caucuses at 4 p.m. at the County Administration Building, 12 E. Fourth Ave. The regular meeting and public hearing follows at 6 p.m. Both sessions are open to the public.
Members of the Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation Authority are slated to attend the caucus to discuss their recommendation to buy treadmills and stationary bikes for the new North Floyd Park recreation center in Armuchee.
County Commissioners took no action on the bids earlier this month.
Vice Chairman Eddie Lumsden attended the Nov. 16 RFPRA meeting to explain their concerns — safety, operational costs and competition with the private sector — and extend the invitation to the caucus.
RFPRA board members said the facility was specifically designed to include a fitness room and the lack of free weights in the recommended package addresses the concerns.
Lumsden said Thursday he still was not completely convinced fitness equipment is the best use of the center’s limited furnishings budget.
“But that’s just my opinion,” he emphasized. “The entire body of commissioners will hear from them.”
A request from Cave Spring to buy an old county dump truck at a reduced price, and the promise to chip in as much as $25,000 if the NAIA Championship football game in December does not break even are among the other items on the board’s agenda.
