ATLANTA -- Guns made in Georgia and sold only within the state would be exempt from federal rules or registration under House Bill 89, introduced Tuesday.

Rep. Tommy Benton, R-Jefferson, said the state could choose to institute its own regulation of firearms for those that would not be covered under federal law, should his bill pass.

"Basically, the bill is saying the interstate-commerce clause (of the U.S. Constitution) doesn't apply to these weapons," he said.

The Constitution grants sole power to the federal government to oversee the sales of goods and services across state lines, known as interstate commerce. It was originally designed to prevent states from imposing tariffs on each other's' goods, but in the last 50 years, it has been used to control activities from racial segregation to healthcare.

Benton argues that as long as these weapons aren't sold out of state, the federal rules should not apply to them.

In the aftermath of the shooting of 26 people at a school in Connecticut, President Barack Obama and others have called for greater controls on guns.

"I don't agree with the rhetoric coming out of Washington that we need more gun laws," Benton said.

His is one of several proposals pending in the legislature that would relax gun controls. At the same time, there are alternative proposals that would toughen them.

None have been schedule for consideration in the committees they have been assigned to.

Rep. Benton is obviously more concerned about dollars than lives. I wonder if it would matter to him if his own child or grandchild fell victim to a shooter? Probably not.

Rep Tommy Benton is trying to do what the citizens of his district elected him to do - uphold the Constitution of the United States, a concept witch most politicians these days are to self-centered & sanctimonious to remember. If our Constitution is to be changed, an Amendment needs to be drawn up, passed through Congress and then ratified by the states as provided by law, instead of trying to circumvent due process. Quite frankly, Ms Bessie, the United States and all her freedoms were built on the foundations set forth by the Constitution. If you don't love this country and support its foundations, there are busses, trains & planes leaving daily.

I would implore you bessieO to do some very basic research before offering the opinion that gun control "saves lives." The locales with the strictest gun control without fail, have the highest crime and murder rates. The locales with the most conceal carry permits have the lowest crime and murder rates.

That someone else commits a crime with a gun is not a cancellation of my Second Amendment rights. That someone dies by gunshot is not a cancellation of my God-given and Constitutionally recognized right to self-defense.

The Left's arguments on gun control are based in emotion and not fact. There's always a quote about "If we can only save ONE LIFE" or "What about the children?" These are emotional arguments that do not hold water.

An arms locker and a well-trained staff member with a key would have put down the Sandy Hook shooter at the front door and all of those children would still be alive. That is guaranteed.

Gun free zones are not respected by criminals and madmen. They will always find a way to have a weapon. You folks want the rest of us to be defenseless. No thank you.
