Calcium is a very important mineral that aids in bone production, muscle contraction, and many other activities of the body. It is imperative to have calcium for bones to be strong and repaired and the heart to contract. (You see, the heart is a muscle.) It is a huge problem, however, that many people do not get an adequate amount of calcium in their diets. Many women are diagnosed with osteoporosis, a bone disease in which the bones become porous and fracture more easily. Remember that men can have a lack of calcium as well and experience the same problems as women. These pores that weaken the bones can be caused by a lack of calcium in the diet. It is recommended that men and women have about three cups of dairy products daily. Just keep in mind to read labels and get the lowest fat products that one can find in the super markets.

Another important fact is to remember that there are other diseases that can be prevented by just adding calcium to the diet. A lack of this mineral may also lead to rickets (bowed legs), infertility, paralysis, convulsions and even death.

Calcium is essential in people for the proper growth of bones and teeth. With the adequate amount of exercise, calcium, and other essential minerals, a person will be started on a route to a healthier life.

Calcium can be taken in through dairy products such as milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, some meats, vegetables that are deep green and deep orange, grains that have been fortified (added vitamins and minerals) and many other foods. The secret is to have a full diet and include at the groups in the food guide pyramid: Bread/Grains, Fruits, Vegetables, Meat/meat alternatives, Dairy and limit the fat. Along with this, a daily dose of Vitamin D (sunshine) helps your body metabolize all the needed vitamins and minerals your body needs.
