Floyd County Superior Court Clerk Barbara Penson said someone is stealing her campaign signs.

“It’s been almost a nightly issue for me,” Penson said.

The thieves seem to be targeting her signs near Tracy’s Carpet on Calhoun Highway and Unity Christian School on Ga. 53.

Penson, a Democrat, is running against Republican Mark McAllister in the Nov. 6 general election.

She filed a report with the Floyd County Police Department last week.

The signs are expensive. Yard signs are $6 but the larger signs are $39.99 and $59.99, she said.

“That doesn’t include the cost for frames, nails and labor,” she said.

Wendy Davis, with the Floyd County Democratic Party said sign theft has been a problem this campaign season.

“We had two women come to our HQ today to replace stolen Obama signs,” Davis said on Saturday.

“One woman recommended that folks put Vaseline on the corners of the signs to deter theft,” she continued. “We have a right to political expression. If you like a different candidate, put his or her sign in your own yard, but stay out of my yard.”

Layla Shipman of the Floyd County Republic Party said there has been theft of Republican candidate signs as well but no police reports have been filed.

“The Floyd County GOP does not condone these antics from either Democrat or Republican,” Shipman said. “This type of behavior is both childish and unprofessional.”
