Chattooga County Sole Commissioner Jason Winters is hiring political rival Joe Reed as director of roads and bridge maintenance.

Reed was the county’s director of public works for 15 years under Commissioner Jim Parker’s administration. Back then, the department encompassed public works, sanitation and public transit. Now that job is being divided.

The director of public works title is being abolished. Its current titleholder, Lamar Canada, will become the director of sanitation and transit.

Reed unsuccessfully challenged Winters in the 2008 and 2012 Democratic primaries.

Winters said he thinks splitting the department duties will allow the directors to better focus on finding efficiencies — important because five vacant public works positions are likely to remain unfilled for the next four years.
