Students at the Darlington Lower School are holding their own vote today as their parents make their way to the polls.

The Darlington students are voting on characters from Author-illustrator Brian Pinkney's books. Two parties - White and Purple - are running characters from a variety of Pinkney's books, including "Sukey and the Mermaid," "Max Found Two Sticks," "The Boy and the Ghost" and "Jojo's Flying Sidekick."

Third and fourth graders pulled out character values and invented platforms based on actions within the stories, according to a press release from the school.

The school's gymnasium was turned into a voting precinct for the day's election, and students will be forced to go through the same routine as their parents: present a Voter ID card, waiting to get their ballot from the check-in station, casting their vote in a booth and even mock reporters and interviewers to talk to the voters afterward.

A 2 p.m. party is planned to announce and celebrate the winner of the mock election. Pinkney is scheduled to visit the school later in November.
