THOSE DOLLED-UP SCARECROWS newly visiting Broad Street are adding a neat visual touch as Rome joins other cities in using them as a harvest/Halloween season decoration (Summerville has been doing this for some years).

Local store owners are obviously going all-out in both effort and cleverness. A true appreciation depends on walking the length of most of the downtown. Just driving past isn’t the way to observe them — too many parked customer cars always in the way.

The winner of this first-ever Downtown Development Authority contest, as determined by citizen votes, will get $200 to donate to the charity of their choice. The entire community will win if this becomes an annual event and downtown fills up with as many scarecrows as it has storefronts. One neat aspect of this is that such creations can be recycled and dolled up from year to year, even add “friends” to create tableaus.

And with the trees now also festooned with their annual Christmas lights so the scarecrows can admire them it does turn downtown into a pretty magical place, particularly for families.
