Whether covering a “beat” in the downtown (and next-door South Rome, it is to be hoped) or along the trail system this is an important public-safety addition. It does much for the visibility of officers, thus indicating to all who see them that not only vigilance but security is in the neighborhood.
Given that the Rome Police Department is below former manpower it is good to know that it continues to recognize the importance of what used to be known as “beat cops” when they were on foot. Such improve contacts and relationships with the areas served, which in turn tend to enhance citizen contact and willingness to become involved.
For the evolving, expanding hike/bike system in particular the presence of such “mounted police” minus horses will ultimately be of great value in encouraging their use. There’s already one newer and exceptionally scenic such trail that would greatly benefit from routine Segway patrols.
