AT PERHAPS THE OPPOSITE EXTREME, forget about attending the Redneck Games in East Dublin this year. They’ve been called off for 2013 due to dwindling attendance — only 1,500 in 2012 when they’ve drawn as many as 5,000 for the weekend in the past.

The games may, or may not, be back in 2014 with the mud pit to dive into and other traditional events such as the Hubcap Hurl, Big Hair competition, Bobbin’ for Pig’s Feet, Competitive Seed Spitting, Dumpster Dive and Redneck Horseshoes (using toilet seats for highbrows unfamiliar with such amusements).

Chances are it will return — simply makes too good TV “news” filmage. Besides, the belly flop last year occurred after the event was moved to May, from the usual Fourth of July holiday period where it is not only rednecks who have more freedom to roam around looking for entertaining things to see.

No doubt the state’s image builders, always trying to polish up Georgia’s appearance to woo business venture dollars, will be glad to not have to explain this phenomenon for at least one year. On the other hand, they’ve still got Honey Boo Boo and clan to deal with. And the antics of the politicians.
