She is known as the person who will redecorate an office now and then, and her fellow co-workers keep an eye on her for fashion tips and style.

But Connie Blalock does so much more than that, and after 35 years with the Floyd County Schools system, the executive secretary to the superintendent is retiring.

Monday is officially her last day.

Blalock began working at the central office in 1996, and she has worked for three county superintendents.

“Connie has always handled superintendent changes in a very special way and she respects each and every person who comes into her office,” said Angela Banks, administrative secretary.

“She has been a very important role model to all of us secretaries, as well as an inspirational friend to all who were in need of encouragement,” she added.

She can handle challenges, said Tim Hensley, assistant to the superintendent. “Connie is professional and proficient in her job,” he said. “But, what has impacted us most is her commitment to her family and her genuine interest in each of ours.”

When she’s not working long hours, she likes to spend time with her grandchildren and shopping.

She plans on spending more time with them when she retires and wants to take tae kwon do classes for women.

Blalock said if she could have any other job, she would have become a fashion designer.

Floyd County Schools Superintendent Lynn Plunkett said she will miss everything about Blalock.

“She’s one of the most caring people I’ve ever met and a genuine person of strong faith who would always help me with my job,” said Plunkett. “Connie’s my friend, too. Plus, we have to share grandbaby stories,” she added.

Plunkett also admitted that she will miss comparing shoes, purses and won’t have someone there to remind her to apply lipstick.
