There’s going to be a shootout at Stonebridge Golf Club next Thursday and anyone who wants to participate is invited.
The Rome Braves and Floyd County Police Department have partnered this year to host the Braves Celebrity Shootout Golf Tournament to benefit the
Boys & Girls Club of Rome.
“All proceeds will go directly to the Boys and Girls Club,” said Floyd County Police Chief Bill Shiflett.
Rome Police Chief Hubert Smith will also be honored.
Smith will be retiring in July and has served as chief for 19 years.
“He was also the first member to sign up for the Boys & Girls Club in 1953,” Shiflett said of Smith. “He was a member there and worked there as a referee,” Shiftlett said. “I remember him as a referee. He made a bad call on me.”
Shiftlett explained that when he played football at the Boys & Girls Club, he had made a 60-yard touchdown run and Smith, referee at the time, said he stepped out of bounds and called it back.
“I remember a lady came out of the stands and chased him with a pocketbook,” Shiflett said. “I knew then he could be a good police officer because of the evasiveness he took during the situation,” Shiftlett said.
The deadline for teams to enter the tournament is Tuesday.
“We’re only going to hold spots for 32 teams,” Shiftlett said.
The cost to enter is $400 per team or $100 per person. Teams or individuals can register at the Floyd County Police Departnment at the Joint Law Enforcement Center or at the ticket office located at State Mutual Stadium. Hole and team sponorships are available as well at $100 a hole.
A lunch provided by Chick-fil-A, driving range balls and a cart are all provided with the cost. The event will begin at 11 a.m. with registeration at 9:30 a.m.
