About 50 models will strut the catwalk during a fashion show Thursday night at Berry College’s Krannert Ballroom wearing the finest in handmade recyclable outfits. Think Prada meets plastic or Gucci meets garbage.
The show is the first major effort of
Project greenBERRY, a pro-recycling group based at the college, to promote the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling.
Along those lines, the organization adopted the slogan “rethink, revalue, recreate” and invited anyone with a green eye for fashion to create an outfit of at least 75-percent recyclable material to be modeled during the show.
The event, planned for 6:30 p.m., is paperless, which means there are no tickets, but admission will be $5 at the door (no more than $15 per family) or $2 for students with a student ID.
All proceeds will benefit Keep Rome-Floyd Beautiful and the Rome-Floyd Recycling Center.
The fashion should be fun, said organizer Lynne Manna, but there is also an important message to be learned.
As such, facts and figures about the impact and need for recycling will be displayed on television screens around the ballroom during the show, which was produced by Berry Middle School students.
The middle school students have already learned a lot while designing and building sets, choosing music, and planning the details of the event.
“We learned about the time it takes for things to break down in the landfills,” said eighth-grader Alex Banerjee. “If we could recycle more we could save money and energy.”
If all goes well, Project greenBERRY will make the trash fashion show an annual event, but its members hope to continue to promote recycling throughout the year with various other efforts.
“We hope when anyone hears Project greenBERRY they know (what we’re about),” said Manna, who is also admission director at the school and a volunteering parent. “Our little school can do a lot to promote recycling.”
