Friends and family on Wednesday mourned the death of John Gregory Davis, who was
shot and killed Tuesday afternoon on Old Dalton Road. His alleged assailant, Robert Timothy Spriggs Jr., has been arrested and charged with murder.
His widow, Teresa Davis, said her husband, 46, was an avid fisherman, hunter, mountain biker and loved his friends and co-workers at the Floyd County School’s maintenance department.
“His favorite thing besides his family and his daughter was his dog Max,” she said.
Max, an Australian shepherd, was once owned by his wife but was taken over by Davis when they met and married three years ago.
Davis also said her husband was the kind of man “that never met a stranger.”
“He could talk to anyone,” she said. “Everyone that met him liked him.”
Her husband had worked for Floyd County Schools for the past five years, and before that he worked several jobs
“He never settled until he found that job,” Davis said.
The couple celebrated their three-year anniversary in September.
“We’d met in May and were married by September,” she said.
Davis is also survived by his daughter Hollie, and step-daughters Tiffany and Jessica.
The members of the maintenance staff at Floyd County Schools were still in shock the day after Davis was killed.
Derry Richardson, the director of facilities, said that Davis was one of his best employees, always willing to do what needed to be done.
“Greg enjoyed helping the kids,” Richardson said. “He was just a great guy.”
He said that the maintenance employees are a “close-knit group, like a family,” and that Davis would be missed.
“We loved him like a brother,” Richardson said. “He can’t be replaced.”
Richardson also said that they planned to do something special for the Davis family, but are still working out the details.
Lynn Plunkett, Floyd County Schools superintendent, said Davis was a wonderful person who loved his job and the school system and took pride in everything he did.
“We’re very sad, that really goes without saying,” Plunkett said Wednesday morning. “We’ve lost one of our family, and we are a family at Floyd County Schools. Our hearts hurt right now.”
She said Davis’ family will be in her prayers.
The family will be receiving friends Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Parkview Chapel of Fred Talley’s Funeral Home, 2516 New Calhoun Highway. Funeral services are planned for 11 a.m. Saturday at The Church of the Northside, located at 75 North Floyd Park Road with the Rev. Brad Prater officiating.
