THE ROME News-Tribune reported on the front page of the Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012, newspaper that Mark McAllister wants a recount of the Floyd County Superior Clerk of Court vote. His opponent is Barbara Penson. His exact quote is revealing, if it is correctly printed, and I am sure newspaper got it right: “With 30,000 votes cast and the margin being 25 votes, a recount is in order,” McAllister said.

Mr. McAllister was in the county courthouse when all provisional ballots and military ballots were counted, as was Ms. Penson, others and myself. To what end is the need for a recount? The job he is seeking entails much math and computer expertise, as Rome begins to put records on computer.

In my opinion, this recount is a waste of taxpayer money. Ms. Evon Billups, along with her staff, has one of the best election offices in the country.

Having served more than a decade as a poll official, I believe our election staff to be 100 percent honest, careful and more than that — caring. They want to get it right.

So, if there were a machine mistake, it would be appropriate to recount everything. Having seen with his own eyes the only votes that could possibly be in question, Mr. McAllister is simply wasting time and the money of the public in a call for a recount.
