I AM DEEPLY saddened because of the recent passing of Merrill “Sonny” Ewing. For many years, he served as manager of the Coosa Country Club here in Rome.

As many Romans know, Sonny was an avid golfer and a friend to his contemporary golfers. He was a man who believed in helping people - without ever asking about “paybacks.”

I can truthfully say this because he helped me and my brother, Dr. Robert Montgomery. For many years, I worked in the snack bar at Coosa Country Club, but I soon became Sonny’s regular caddy at Coosa Country Club. My brother continued to manage the snack bar. In my capacity as a caddy for him, I soon learned that he was not just interested in us as employees but he also encouraged us to excel academically in high school and college.

I truly believe that we made him proud of us. Aside from the academic aspects, he taught us the fundamentals of playing golf — including proper decorum on the golf course. He even allowed me to use his personal set of clubs, but he required me to try to win caddy tournaments in return. I certainly did not disappoint him.

Also, he personally loaned me money so that I could attend my first prom at Main High School. He never mentioned repayment.

I could see clearly that he instilled this same caring attitude in his children. To them, I wish to say that my brother and I share in your sorrow.
