Stuart Charleston pitched a 10-inning complete game on Sunday as the Shorter baseball team posted its first win of the season with a 4-2 victory over North Georgia at the North Georgia Classic.

The victory ended a nine-game losing streak for the Hawks.

Charleston struck out 10 batters and didn’t issue a walk.

North Georgia used six pitchers in the loss.

Jesse Gavigan’s RBI single in the eighth inning trimmed North Georgia’s lead to one run, and an inning later, Dustin Evans scored on Willie Lewis’ single to tie the game.

Forrest led off the 10th with a single, and Taylor Herndon drove in the go-ahead run on a fielder’s choice.

Charleston recorded a pair of swinging strike outs to get the final two outs of the game.

The Hawks got 14 hits.

The Hawks had three each from Lewis and Walker Borneman and two each from Cal Hardie and Dustin Evans.

The Hawks will be on the road for the next six games.

BERRY SOFTBALL: LADY VIKINGS SWEEP AT HOME

The Berry softball team won both ends of Sunday’s doubleheader against Maryville, 9-2 and 9-1, at South Ford Field.

Berry improved to 2-2. Maryville remained winless at 0-6.

In the opener, the Lady Vikings used a five-run first and Caillee Shamoun’s (1-1) pitching to pick up the victory.

Sara Vigue, Kristen Stoll, Lacey Herring and Abbey Daniels hit RBI doubles, and Courtney Hodges added a RBI single to turn a 2-0 deficit into a 5-2 lead in the first.

Jessie Washington, Stoll, Herring, Shelby Smith and Daniels had multi-hit performances for Berry. Hannah Youngdeer drove in both of Maryville’s runs on a two-run single in the first.

Shamoun tossed a complete-game three-hitter for Berry, allowing three hits and two earned runs while striking out four. Maryville’s Megan Mihaliak took the loss, lasting three innings and giving up seven runs (five earned).

In the nightcap, Berry scored all of its runs in the second and third innings to close out the game in five innings.

During a seven-run second, Daniels, Lindsey Campbell, Courtney Cauthen, Washington and Herring drove in runs.

Campbell finished with two hits for Berry while Taylor Dockery had Maryville’s lone base hit.

Freshman Allie Coronado (1-1) earned his first career victory for Berry. She pitched a five-inning complete game two-hitter. Coronado gave up two hits, one unearned run and four walks.

Berry will face Salisbury University (Md.) on Friday at the Methodist University in Fayetteville, N.C.

SHORTER SOFTBALL: LADY HAWKS FINISH STRONG AT TOURNEY

The Shorter softball team defeated Mars Hill, 5-1, on Sunday to finish with a 3-1 record at the Hampton Inn North Invitational.

Former Calhoun star Bre Johnson had three hits and a pair of RBIs to lead the Lady Hawks (3-1).

The middle of the line up — Felicia Morris, Jackie Castaneda and Bre Johnson — had seven of the Lady Hawks’ 10 hits while accounting for three of the four RBIs and four of the five runs.

Johnson drove in her first run in the opening inning, scoring Morris to put the Lady Hawks ahead early. Morris had doubled two batters earlier as part of a two hit day for the junior.

Morris scored again in the third inning when Whitney Hood picked up the RBI on a bases loaded single.

Christina Ezell pitched the complete game, striking out seven over seven innings while allowing just the one run to score to pick up her second win on the season.

The Lady Hawks will be part of the UNA Invitational from the campus of North Alabama, where they will play six games in three days, next weekend.

Earlier on Sunday, the Lady Hawks downed No. 20 Armstrong Atlantic, 3-2, in extra innings when Kendall Johnson launched a two-run home run to right center field for the walk-off victory.

Shorter’s Maddie Bray pitched seven innings while allowing one unearned run. Byrom pitched one inning of relief to pick up the victory.

BERRY INDOOR TRACK

The Berry men’s and women’s track team competed in its second indoor track meet of the season at University of the South in Tennessee.

The 12 Lady Vikings ran against six teams in their conference: Birmingham Southern, Milsaps, Sewanee, Emory, Mississippi College, and Ogelthorpe. They competed in the mile, 800m, 3000m, and the 4x400m relay.

Junior Charlotte Collins, freshman Rachel Dorris, freshman Emily Kaelin, sophomore Annika Stryker, and freshman Claire Park raced the mile. Collins paced the first 8 laps around the 160m track, and then made her move on the last two laps to take first place for the mile.

She posted a 5:43.96 mile personal record. Dorris placed second in the mile, running a 5:47.20. Kaelin is a new runner for the Berry team, and she raced a solid mile time of 6:02.79. Stryker clocked in at 6:36.94, running a college best time for the mile. Park finished with a time of 6:37.26.

“Going into an indoor meet, you never know what you’re going to get,” Stryker said, but I ended up running faster than I ever have in college.” “I was very excited about my time, and I’m even more excited about all the [track] meets to come.”

Sophomores Nicole Fredette and Leslie Stewart raced in the 800m. Fredette finished third with a time of 2:41.80. Stewart raced a time of 2:50.93.

The next event for the day was the 3000m, just short of two miles. Senior and team captain Lauren Nation, freshman Stephanie Mimbs, junior Katy Jordan, and sophomore Kayla Heflin competed in this event.

Nation finished third and raced a time of 11:42.58. Mimbs had never run in the 3000m before, yet she posted a time that was equivalent to a 2 mile personal record. Mimbs finished with a time of 12:04.01. Jordan clocked in at 13:13.30. Heflin achieved a personal record and finished the race in 13:15.86.

For the 4x400m relays, there were two women’s Berry relay teams. Team A consisted of Collin, Stryker, Dorris, and Fredette. Park, Junior Allison Preg, Kaelin, and Stewart raced for Berry Team B. Team A ran an overall time of 4:53.05, and they placed second in the event. Team B raced an overall time of 5:11.53.

The Berry men’s track team also competed at Sewanee Indoor Invitational, racing against six teams.

The Berry men competed in the mile, 800m, 3000m, and the 4x400m.

Junior Ryan James, freshman Kyle Harris, senior Chris White and junior Michael Klein raced in the first event of the day for Berry—the mile.

James raced fast and strong and finished first with a time of 4:37.38. Harris dropped seven seconds off of his personal record for the mile (4:53.27). White raced hard and strong, achieving a personal record mile time of 5:15.46. Klein posted a time of 5:32.26, dropping seven seconds off of his previous personal record.

“I was pretty psyched to win my heat,” White said. “Tactically it was my best race in awhile. I tucked behind the runner in front of me until the end. I then made my move at the end and finished strong.”

Junior Brandon Davis and freshmen Will Howell and Robert Gibase raced in the next event of the day – the 800m. Davis finished second, clocking in at 2:05.59. Right behind him was Howell with a time of 2:06.20. Gibase finished with a time of 2:21.54.

The last event for the Berry men’s team was the 3000m. Senior and team captain Lucas Stocks and freshman Kevin Mason competed in this event. Stocks completed the race with a time of 10:20.02. Mason posted a time of 11:42.53.

The Vikings return to action on March 2 at the UNF Spring Break Invitational in Jacksonville, Fla.
