They also enjoy the company of other enthusiasts as they talk of new equipment or that one part missing to complete a pet project.
These aspects combine every year at the Northwest Georgia Amateur Radio Club’s Al Brock Memorial Hamfest/Tailgate, which will take place this Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Rome Senior Center on Riverside Parkway.
Admission is free, and the public is invited to attend. Food vendors will be on site, and drawings will be conducted for prizes.
“It’s a chance for us to showcase not only the equipment that will be there but also talk about the things we’ve done and what we want to do in the future,” said Grover Keith, the club’s secretary.
Several amateur radio operators will be on hand with equipment and used parts that range anywhere from small handheld radios to some of the largest parts.
“We’ve had people come in from Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina in the past,” Keith said. “It’s a chance for individuals to sell, trade or swap amateur radio parts and ideas, and meet people you talk with over the radio from time to time.”
Keith said they hope to see many people attend, even some who may not know much about amateur radio.
The club, which was formed in 1931, has worked to become an active member of the community and continues to provide education about amateur radio. They were a part of the Emergency Preparedness Day at Mount Berry Square mall last month.
Saturday’s event is named in honor of Al Brock, a key member and former president of the club who passed away 10 years ago this month while helping set up for the 2002 Hamfest.
