Floyd County Sheriff Tim Burkhalter and school board member David Cox were the only local candidates to file campaign finance reports by the deadline.

Candidates had until midnight on Sunday to file timely reports of contributions and spending, although a grace period runs through Friday before a $125 fine is assessed.

Burkhalter, a Democrat, is facing a challenge from Republican Cary Cooper in the Nov. 6 general election.

The incumbent sheriff reported $27,131.47 cash on hand as of Sept. 30, with $25,115 in campaign debt. Cooper had $52.58 as of the last reporting period, which ended June 30.

Burkhalter’s filing with the State Ethics Commission indicates he took in $11,774.41 during the past three months and spent about $24,000 on advertising, including on campaign T-shirts and listings in programs for high school football teams and the Coosa Valley Fair.

Major donors included Frank Hannah of Summerville, who gave $2,500 — the maximum allowed — and $500 contributors Michael Barron and Delos Yancey of Rome and the Cook & Connelly law firm of Summerville.

Cox, the Republican incumbent in the Floyd County Board of Education District 2 seat, reported taking in and spending $2,540 during the reporting period that ended Sept. 30.

Major contributors were Glenda Cox, who gave $1,000, and the Floyd County Republican Party, which donated $500. The money went to Hi-Tech Signs of Rome for advertising during the month of July.

Democrat Everett Ballard is opposing Cox in the general election.

Candidates in the two Floyd County Commission seats filled by special election on July 30 had a different filing schedule. Reports were due July 16 and year-end reports must be filed by Dec. 31.

Rhonda Wallace, who won the Post 1 seat, reported taking in $29,545 and spending $21,728.32 by the cut-off date. Nathan Roberts, who also sought the seat, reported $7,594 in contributions and $3,923 in expenses.

In the Post 4 race, Larry Maxey took in $8,113 and spent $8,038.50 in his successful bid for the seat. Opponent Jerry Lee reported $10,460 in donations and $9,140 in expenses.

All four candidates ran as Republicans.
