Man charged with possession of meth, Lorcet

A Rome man was arrested early Tuesday morning on drug and theft charges.

According to Floyd County Jail records:

Stephen Matthew Smith, 23, of 1310 Cave Spring St., was arrested by Rome police around 1 a.m. and charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance and theft by taking.

Police say Smith was found to be in possession of one and a half Lorcet tablets and a small amount of methamphetamines at 910 North Broad Street. Officers were investigating suspicious behavior by Smith and two other individuals, and the drugs were discovered during a consent search of a vehicle.

Smith admitted to police that the Lorcet and methamphetamines were his.

He was also charged with theft for taking a large amount of change from the fountain at Floyd Medical Center on Monday night.

Smith remains in jail on $12,150 bail.
