Saint Mary’s Catholic School hosted the Independent Middle Schools Spelling Bee on April 28.

The winners (above) were: First place – Nathaniel Tan, 8th grade (center) of Saint Mary’s Catholic School; Second place – Noah Jackson, 6th grade (at right) of Unity Christian School and Third place – Payton Stone, 7th grade, (at left) of Excel Christian Academy.

The winning word was “hollandaise.”

The area independent schools — Saint Mary’s School, Unity Christian School, Berry College Elementary and Middle School, Darlington School, Excel Christian Academy and Montessori School of Rome — have formed a loosely organized association that promotes cooperation and interaction between the schools and their students. The association sponsors events such as the spelling bee that allow their students to experience the same types of activities that students in the much larger city and county public systems experience.

Finalists from Saint Mary’s School, Unity Christian School, Excel Christian Academy and Berry Middle School participated in the spelling bee.
