SHEPHERD, Mont. (AP) — A 44-year-old man was apparently gored to death by a long-horned bull in a pasture near his south-central Montana home.

Yellowstone County sheriff's Lt. Kent O'Donnell says a neighbor spotted the bull standing over the man's body and called 911 at about 9 a.m. Thursday. Authorities who arrived at the ranch about six miles north of Shepherd believe the attack actually happened an hour or two earlier.

The Billings Gazette first reported the death.

O'Donnell says some of the man's clothes were torn from his body.

Law enforcement and medical crews who responded were able to get the large bull into a separate fenced area and used a road grader to keep it away from the victim.

The man's name has not been released.
