The Jets told Dixon that the move was only temporary, according to Dixon's mother, Peri Jones, who was contacted by the RN-T on Monday night.
Jones said the Jets told Dixon that the move was "a numbers thing."
Dixon has seen action in the first three games of the season. He has one solo tackle and one assist.
Jones said Dixon "didn't seem too worried" about the move, and said that Dixon's agent told him that three teams are interested in him if he doesn't rejoin the Jets.
Dixon's release came after the Jets lost Darrelle Revis to an injury.
Revis has a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee that will require surgery, likely meaning he'll miss the rest of the season.
Revis was injured in the third quarter of the Jets' 23-20 overtime victory at Miami.
Dixon began his time with the Jets in 2010, playing in three games and starting one. Last season, he started three games and played in 16. He amassed 11 solo tackles, five assists and had 1½ sacks.
