Crews with Beynon Sports Surfaces are confident the resurfacing of Maddox Track will be done before the end of the month, the Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation Authority heard Monday.

“They thought they could be finished by the end of the week, but then we had the rain,” RFPRA Executive Director Richard Garland said.

The subcontractor is putting a new top on the track at Barron Stadium because the original rubber-granule surface was melting in the heat. A different material is being used this time, but Garland said high humidity and rain will affect how quickly the layers dry.

The RFPRA is in talks about building a VIP pavilion at Barron Stadium. Member Larry Hestely said it would be a joint project between Rome, Floyd County, the Authority and possibly Shorter University.

“They really need one,” he noted.

In other actions, the board heard:

  • The parks division is moving its equipment shelters from the old RFPRA headquarters building on West Third Street to its new base — the former American Legion Post 52 site at 107 North Ave.

Multi-Craft Construction Services LLC is renovating the building and had expected to be done by Oct. 1. Parks Superintendent Todd Wofford said it would likely take another month to complete and a month to move in.

  • A committee of RFPRA staffers and Coosa Valley Tennis Association members is vetting candidates for the tennis pro position. Garland said 25 applicants have been narrowed to five and further phone interviews are scheduled this week. Plans are to make the selection by Nov. 1.

  • Repair work to the tune of $10,250 has started on the roof of the Thornton Recreation Center at North Floyd Park. The roof has leaked since the facility opened in early 2011, but both the contractor and roofer failed to address the issue and are now out of business.

Garland said the repairs, by Atlanta-based Innovative Roofing Group, are expected to be done “in the next couple of weeks.”
