ATLANTA (AP) — School officials are telling parents in a metro Atlanta school system they will have to pay for Advanced Placement exams under a policy change.

Southwest DeKalb High School Principal Carolyn Williams cites state budget cuts as one reason some parents will have to pay for the tests next year.

WSB-TV reports that Williams informed parents that the Georgia Department of Education's budget will fund only one exam for students from low-income families during the coming year, a change from previous years.

She said the state agency is unable to fund any exams for students who are not in the school system's free or reduced-price lunch program.

That means families must pick up the cost of the exams at $89 each, or $53 for students from low-income families.
