The Rome Civic Center opens today as a second universal early polling place for the Nov. 6 general election.

Registered Floyd County voters may cast ballots at the facility on Jackson Hill from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Thursday, or at the County Administration Building, 12 E. Fourth Ave., through Friday.

All precincts will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day.

In addition to the presidential election, a number of local races are contested.

Campaign finance reports were due Thursday to the State Ethics Commission, although a grace period runs through Nov. 1 before $125 late fees are assessed.

Floyd County Sheriff Tim Burkhalter, a Democrat, is facing a challenge from Republican Cary Cooper.

Burkhalter reported $3,703 in contributions this month and $3,080 in expenses, leaving him with a cash balance of $27,775. Major donors included Big Time Products owner Harry Pierce, Rome/LP Gas Inc., and the law firm of Cox, Byington, Vorwin, Brumlow & Tyman.

Cooper had not filed his report as of Sunday evening.

Republican Eddie Lumsden is seeking to oust state Rep. Barbara Massey Reece, D-Menlo, from her House District 12 seat. The district covers western Floyd and all of Chattooga County.

Lumsden reported nearly $57,000 in cash donations during the election cycle, with about $17,000 coming in since the last report on Sept. 30.

He pumped up his advertising this month, putting a over $44,000 into his campaign and leaving a balance of $1,980 as of Thursday.

Lumsden donors this month included election committees of Republican state lawmakers John Meadows of Calhoun, Allen Peake of Macon, Ed Lindsey of Atlanta, Matt Dollar of Marietta, Donna Sheldon of Dacula, Larry O’Neal of Warner Robbins and Terry England of Winder.

Reece had not filed her report as of Sunday evening.

In the Floyd County clerk of court race, Republican Mark McAllister is challenging incumbent Democrat Barbara Penson.

McAllister took in $500 this month from the Floyd County Republican Party, bringing his total funding to $4,623. He’s spent nearly $4,000 on his campaign, leaving him a cash balance of $631 and an outstanding $2,200 loan.

Penson had not filed as of Sunday evening.

David Cox, the Republican incumbent for the Floyd County Board of Education District 2 seat reported no donations and no expenses. His challenger, Democrat Everett Ballard, had not filed as of Sunday evening.

The Congressional District 14 candidates have a different reporting schedule with the Federal Elections Commission.

Incumbent Republican Tom Graves reported taking in $1.1 million this election cycle, through Oct. 17, with $24,080 coming in this month. He’s spent nearly $997,000 on his campaign and had $16,781 remaining in his campaign chest.

Danny Grant, his Democratic challenger, reported a total of $11,080 in contributions and $6,492 in expenses, leaving him with $4,586 cash on hand as of Sept. 30.

The district covers the counties of Floyd, Chattooga, Polk, Gordon, Walker, Dade, Catoosa, Whitfield, Murray, Haralson, Paulding and part of Pickens County.
