Charles Patterson sings lyrics from a laptop as a TV displays the computer screen to the group at Charles’ Gospel Singing and Fellowship at the Anthony Recreation Center. The non-denominational group sings together at the center every Wednesday from 1 to 3 p.m., every Monday at the Charles C. Parker Center from 10 a.m. to noon, and every Thursday at the Shannon Recreation Center from noon to 3 p.m. There is no cost for attendance. (Brittany Hannah, RN-T.com)
Member James T. Gillian, who attends each week, says the group’s leader Charles Patterson is doing some admirable work by not expecting anything in return.
“Charles started this group about eight years ago,” Gillian says, “I’ve been a part of this group for two years and it’s so uplifting.”
The group sings via karaoke method by finding lyrics from a laptop and placing them on a computer screen. Everyone that attends is invited to sing.
Bill Gore Sr., who is also group member, said attendance varies each week but the group could use more members.
“When we started this group at McDonald’s in the spring of 2004, we all realized we had something big on our hands” Gore said, “I realized immediately that I enjoy the fellowship.”
Jim Gillian said he will keep coming back. “The warmth and friendliness I experience is the reason why I’ll continue to attend events.”
The Charles’ Gospel Singing and Fellowship meets Mondays from 10 a.m. to noon at the Charles Parker Center and meets at the Winthrop Manor East the last Monday of each month from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. It meets Wednesdays at the Roman Court from 10 to 11 a.m. and Thursdays at the Shannon Community Center from noon until 3 p.m.
