The heavy black smoke over the North Rome-Celanese area that was visible as the sun set Thursday was the result of a Rome-Floyd County Fire Department training exercise at their center off North Avenue.

Several alert citizens called both 911 and the Rome News-Tribune to report the smoke, but dispatchers make sure the source was the controlled burn.

The exercise comes one day after the department burned a house on Etowah Terrace for another exercise.
