President Michael Adams has asked the school's chancellor to withdraw a proposal that called for demolishing Legion Pool and replacing it with a smaller pool away from its current location in the heart of campus.
The Athens Banner-Herald reports that Adams made the request in a letter dated Oct. 17, which was released Monday.
The plan had drawn sharp opposition because of its history. It was built in 1935 by the American Legion and is eligible to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
However, Adams defended the plan in his letter, saying is not heavily used by students and is in what is now a congested area on campus.
