It wasn’t your run of the mill gasoline drive off at the Allied Waste facility, 14 Redmond Court in West Rome.

According to Rome police reports:

An employee at the business told investigators Monday that someone had taken some 2,000 gallons of diesel fuel from the business during the month of January. It was not clear on police reports whether or not the theft occurred at one time, or over a number of occasions. The fuel was valued at $5,400.

The employee also said that a half dozen truck tires, worth more than $1,300 had also been stolen at the site.

The real underlying core problem with the education system is that teachers are not paid enough money in the first place. Although, currently, most teachers get a large chunk of the year off (winter break, spring break, summer), this benefit does not counter-balance the need for higher salaries because those breaks are often used for futher education for the teachers.

If Georgians are not willing to pay teachers more, then what kind of teachers do we expect? If the Braves were only willing to pay five- to six-figure salaries, what kind of baseball players would we expect?

As it stands, the highly-skilled teachers who continue to teach do it for two things: the love of teaching and non-salary benefits (which are now being eroded by our state). If we put more bogus hurdles in the way, then even more highly-skilled teachers will leave the profession. And, given the poor salaries, we will be unable to attract capable replacements.

A Rome man had 8-10 shots fired into his Howell Street home Monday night. Police believe the incident may have been related to a domestic call at the same address earlier Monday night.

According to Rome police reports:

Elliott Haymer said the shot were fired through a bedroom window around 7:40 p.m. When police arrived they recovered a number of 9 mm shells outside the master bedroom. Several of the bullets penetrated the headboard where Haymer would have been sleeping.

Police reports indicate that Haymer and his wife had been arguing earlier, but that the woman left with another family member at that time.
