A coordinated strike started last week by inmates protesting conditions at Georgia prisons has kept Hays State Prison in Trion and three other state facilities in lockdown.

The facility was in lockdown on Dec. 12, Dec. 13 and 14 said Department of Corrections spokeswoman Peggy Chapman.

An employee, who would not identify himself, told the Rome News-Tribune that the facility would resume normal procedures at 1 p.m. on Tuesday. However, Chapman said that information was false and that the lockdown continues.

Georgia’s 26 other state prisons are operating under normal conditions.

The list of demands ranged from a living wage for work and “decent” health care to nutritious meals and access to their families.

Chapman said officials are continuing to assess the status of the facility and the lockdown will continue until an internal investigation and security assessment are completed.

“The department will ensure appropriate safety measures are in place before the lockdown is lifted,” Commissioner Brian Owens said in a statement on Dec. 13.

Attempts by the Rome News-Tribune to contact Hays State Prison Warden Clay Tatum on Monday were unsuccessful.

A coordinated strike started last week by inmates protesting conditions at Georgia prisons has not affected the Floyd County Prison, but Hays State Prison in Trion remained locked down on Dec. 12.

Floyd County Warden Jeff Chandler said there have been no problems at the local facility on Black’s Bluff Road.

“We’re in good shape,” he said Dec. 12. “We had intelligence about a month before that it was going to happen, and we were looking to see if there were any tell-tale signs. There weren’t.”

A Hays State worker on duty Dec. 12 said officials authorized to comment on conditions there would not be available until Dec. 13. But the man, who would not give his name, said the prison is under control.

“There hasn’t been any violence; it’s all been peaceful. Everybody’s just confined to their cells,” he said.

A press release issued by supporters stated the strike is aimed at forcing the Georgia Department of Corrections to “stop treating them like animals and slaves and institute programs that address their basic human rights.”

The list of demands ranged from a living wage for work and “decent” health care to nutritious meals and access to their families.

A spokesman for the DOC could not be reached Dec. 12.

We should outsource our prisoners to China. Se how they like it then. If a few fall off the boat on the way, well, no big deal.

These guys have it really good in prison. I'm fine with feeding them dog crap 3 times a day. Seriously. We treat them way too good, considering what they do to end up in prison.

We should spend as little as possible to house them.

Dear parentofinmate...last time I checked, people do not become inmates because of "simple little mistakes". They become inmates because they committed a felony offense. I worked 16 years in the largest penal system in the nation and served in various ranks from the bottom to the top and also had a family member go to prison. I still could care less that an felon is provided with anything more than basic necessities which consist of adequate medical, food, and shelter. How many times did you excuse away your family member's "simple little mistakes" and shift the blame to someone else? Hopefully your family member will toughen up and learn responsibility for their own actions while they're paying for the simple little mistake. Hope they enjoy their sack lunch and missing "It's a Wonderful Life" on tv due to their lockdown.

Let's get the State of Georgia to contract all prisoners to Mexico. Bet we can get them housed cheap there and they will make sure that they are cared for real good!

@tamikalynn....If you worked at Hays State Prison before, you'd know that there's an Annex there for Medium & Minimum Security inmates for lower level & none violent crimes which is still called the Boot Camp, so you can quite with your blatant & exaggerations attempting to mislead people who don't know any better. Obviously you couldn't handle the job there or anywhere else for that matter in that there's continually a very high percentile of Correctional Officer turnover & there's always openings for CO's. So why quit did you quit? Did you get tired of getting bathed down in the middle of numerable inmates jerk circle & hated the aftertaste?

I would also like to say that unless you have in fact worked inside a state prison mr_anonymous2010,you have no idea what is going on inside those prison walls. The inmates are there for a reason. If it were your parent, children, significant other that was raped, killed, molested, body dismembered then you would have a different view. They are not placed there for stealing cookies out of the cookie jar. As far as this being paid for work, decent healthcare, and nutritious food..this is RIDICULOUS! They are inmates and they should work without wage. The healthcare is better than some plans that people actually PAY for(thousands of dollars are spent on inmates for acne medication a year..who CARES if they have a pimple) and the food has a set standard as far as calories, the food groups, etc. No, it is not seasoned and not gourmet..but they get to eat and it's a "healthy' meal. No steak, hamburgers on the grill, cold beer, or grandmas desserts. The inmates chose to have this all taken away. Do the crime, pay the time! Georgia, as a system, is actually a bit more lenient on inmates than they should be. I would also like to mention that the inmates receive treatment for AIDS, Hepatitis C and various other diseases while in prison, and end up dying when they get out of prison because they can't afford the medication. Spend a day in the life of a Georgia inmate..you will find that it's not bad at all. They receive an education, religion, rec time, visitation, 3 meals a day, Dr appts and medication, phone calls, cable television, laundry is washed, living quarters are cleaned..all for FREE! Now tell me they deserve more!!

parentofinmate: I worked at Hays for 6 yrs. There is not one inmate in there doing time for a "small" crime. This is a maximum security prison, not the county jail!

I find it quite odd that the GDC says they're locking prisoners down for security reasons to prevent a riot while they're also removing prisoners from cells at the same time because they won't come out. Which story is true? Either the prisoners are staying in and won't come out or the GDC is lying as usual and using force to remove them because of the protest. GCC doesn't like men behaving like men, they want this controversy so they can make a point that inmates are creating a riot when in fact they're the instigators. The real truth is that they don't like being challenged by the very own system they've created & fostered since back when past Commissioner Wayne Gardner flew from GDC facilities quite regularly in the GDC's helicopter with his personal Goon Squad beating up inmates from camp to camp. The only people who can change this are the people who are affected by it and that would be the persons incarcerated, their families, the media, & causes geared towards humane treatment of human beings irregardless of their status in Man's eye in that we're all children of GOD. The GDC is using force because that is ALL they know and have used, now that PEACE is being used, they are STUNNED and can't handle it. I say continue with this NONVIOLENT STRIKE....and thank you to the media for taking this on.

Well like it or not, dont break the law and get yourself put in a place like this then you dont have to worry about what happens to you while youre there!

Can I ask how the 3 inmates were killed and who killed them? Just curious I guess.

Don't think for one moment that the FBI & the Dept of Justice aren't taking notes on this article. I really love this topic very much as well would like to ask that while the FBI is investigating when they do show up, that they also make sure to put under the microscope why 3 inmates at the Coffee Correctional Facility were killed over a 2 week period just prior to the lockdown which very characteristically wasn't even publicized in the mainstream media as usual in that the GA Dept of Corrections is notoriously known for sweeping anything that would make them look bad under the carpet. I'd love to be the fly on the wall watching when everyone from the Commissioner on down starts running around as if an ant bed were stirred up when the Feds show up. All the butt kissing & "Yes Sir, No Sir" isn't going to work when the impartial & unbiased Feds show up. All the remarks that are being made are merely fanning the flame, so just keep talking adding gasoline to the fire that's been sparked. It's going to be extremely ugly as well as profoundly embarrassing for the GDC & heads will roll big time. You Guys have no inkling whatsoever what you've started here, it's not going away either. Just keep talking & I'll keep posting to add more pertinent information for readers all over the country of this article & when the Truth is eventually revealed & let me reiterate that it "WILL" be revealed, go sit down somewhere & just shut up.

parentofinmate..........someone's child, parent, grandparent or whatever should have been thinking of their mother, their children, their grandchildren when they went out and murdered, raped, stole, sold and violated the laws of the land to become a prisoner. It is called paying your debt to society not vacation.........GET REAL!!!!!!

If you had a family member in there, you may feel different. I'm not saying they need a break. But, they are not animals. Yes, some are murderers and some are there for small mistakes. So, please be careful with your choice of words. Cause if you've never been put through this, then you have no idea what it feels like to be on this end. Like I said, not taking up for the prisoners, but they are someones child, brother, sister, daddy, mommy, grandparent and etc.....

I'm with you. This makes me almost as mad as the woman paying with food stamps at the store who bought about $20 worth of candy with my tax money. Not healthly, filling food, but CANDY!

Okay. So pay them a "living wage." Many in free society work for the federal minimum wage, so that should be enough for them. Then tax them on it. Make them pay Social Security. Make them pay for their lodging, meals, health care, dental and vision care, for having their laundry done and their trash hauled away. Make them pay for their share of water, sewer, power, and gas, as well as the cable tv. If they want to exercise, charge them a gym membership fee. And lets not forget paying restitution to their victims, court fines, and child support.

I bet it wouldn't be long before they held another "strike" to change things back.

Wow they are complaining of the unjust they think they were given....... humm, then they should not do the crimes if they cant deal with the prison! as always said , three squares and a cot... nowadays more I am sure, all for free to them! got no room for complaining do they!Living wage for work....I think not, why! they would not work in the real world for min wage and a real job! rather steal, drug deal etc.their way thru life, so no they can just sit there for all I care.

They should all be confined to their cells, 23 hours out of 24 each day. Trouble constantly brews there because they are all allowed to mingle 16 out of 24 hours. All they do is plot what they're gonna do to someone, gamble, tattoo each other and have sexual encounters, just to name a few things. I know, for I have worked there. Keep them locked down and your problems disappear. If they set fire to there mattress in retaliation, let them suffer the consequences of dying in their cell. I'm sure they will be replaced by another inmate, because of the overcrowded conditions.

I think they should bring back the CHAIN GANGS and work them like dogs. Crime was not a holiday from society then like it is today and people were more afraid to get locked up. When did punishment become a vacation!!!

I agree with RomeFrog. These people are not on a cruise, it is called a prison for a reason. They have a life in there than some out working. If they got some dogs like Calafornia that can find cell phones they could find them and the employees are the ones bringing the phones in and selling them.

Let me guess they want retirement also maybe 401k, profit sharing, paid vacation. Leave them in there for a few days without feeding them they will want to work then. Transfer them to Floyd County Jail for a week they would be happy to be at hays after that little trip.
