The parking lot of Kmart became a testimony to the hazards of reckless driving during a safety expo Saturday.

Hosted by Pepperell High School’s Students Against Destructive Decisions club, the Safe Driving Expo included a demonstration of how emergency responders use the Jaws of Life to extract someone from a wrecked vehicle, a simulation that gave the experience of driving while intoxicated, a navigation course and a seat belt safety demonstration.

“We put this on to educate the public about distractions inside cars and outside cars,” said Alana Ellenburg, Pepperell’s SADD leader. “When you get behind the wheel of a car, you need to be driving and only driving.”

Part of the navigation course included driving with one hand off the wheel as if talking on a cell phone.

Ellenburg estimated about 300 people came to the event.

“We have more than doubled our attendance from last year,” she said.
