Sunny skies and scorching temperatures eventually gave way to heavy cloud cover late in the afternoon at the Coosa Country Club, and a thundershower moved through the area just as the final group was completing its round.
But the bad weather didn’t manage to interrupt a day that was filled with impressive shots and solid scores during the second round of the three-day AJGA event.
Andy Shim, of Duluth, strung together a scorecard that was dotted with red numbers, and he took over the lead in the boys division by shooting a six-under 65 and moving to nine under for the tournament.
In the girls division, Marissa Kay, of Delray Beach, Fla., emerged as the new frontrunner after she rolled through the second round of the event by carding a three-under 68 to move to 1-over for the tourney.
“I had two short birdie putts — one on No. 5 and one on No. 6,” Kay said. “I was able to make (those), and the birdies got me focused and helped boost my confidence.”
The stage is now set for what should be an intense final day of action today, as Shim will carry a three-shot into the third round, and Kay will take a skinny one-stroke edge into the final 18 holes.
“It’s really been neat to see what these players can do,” said tournament director Mark Finger. “For most of the day, there were perfect scoring conditions out here, with little-to-no breeze, and the players went to work.”
Ben Wolcott, the boys’ first-round leader, is now in second place at 6-under, and Greyson Sigg is in third place, four shots off the lead.
On the girls’ side, Maria Maymon and Sophia Schubert are both one shot behind Kay, and two others — Sarah Harris and Jessica Haigwood — are two shots back.
During Wednesday’s action, things became a little dicey around 4:30 p.m. when the final group of the day had to hustle to complete their round before the thundershower moved in.
The “warning horn” sounded just as the final group was finishing the 18th hole, but the players were able to putt out before the storm hit.
“I had this image in my mind of us having to pull that group off the fairway … and I knew it probably wasn’t going to be a short delay,” said Finger. “But luckily, it held off just long enough. When that final putt dropped in, I was able to take a deep breath.”
Long before the storm moved in, Shim and Kay had stormed through their rounds to take over the top spots on the leaderboard.
Shim came into the day two strokes behind Wolcott, but Shim got hot early in the day and never cooled off.
He carded four straight birdies during one stretch, and made seven birdies overall.
On the girls’ side, Kay recorded 13 pars and four birdies during a strong and steady performance that moved her from a tie for eighth place into sole possession of first.
Today’s final-round play begins with tee times at 7:30 a.m., with the final group set to tee off at 12:40 p.m.

Kim leads the local pack
Armuchee High star Mark Kim carded a 3-over 74 on Wednesday to pace the local contingent in the boys division. He now sits at nine over for the tourney, and sits atop the Greater Rome leaderboard.
Others from Rome on the boys’ side included Zachary Vick (who shot a second-round 79), Jonathan Mason (79), Jack Kelly (79) and Ryan Cunningham (84).
Hannah Mae Deems, the lone local player in the girls’ event, shot her second straight 78 on Wednesday.
Local connections
Michaela Owen, a 14-year old from Suwanee who is competing in the girls division, has some interesting local ties.
Her father, Jim Owen, who also happens to be her coach, was a star basketball player for Coosa High and Berry College.
He is now the head golf coach at Oglethorpe. He has been at the school for 29 years, and has spent 17 years as the head coach for the Stormy Petrels. Owen was recently named SCAC Coach of the Year for the 11th time.
Owen has likely been impressed with what he has seen from his daughter in recent days.
Michaela took second place last week at a tournament at Barnsley Gardens, and is competing strongly this week at Coosa despite being one of younger players in the event.
