Police were called to the Sears store on Martha Berry Highway on Sunday after employees said the store safe was robbed and $11,000 was taken, reports state.

According to Rome police reports:

Around 7 p.m. Sunday evening, July 24, a man and two women entered the store. The two women inquired about a job application. Employees say a human resources employee took the women in her office to apply for jobs, while the man entered the safe room near the HR office.

Police say the man pried the safe open with a screwdriver and took $11,000. He then found a lock box of money in the same room and took $2,000 from the box.

After taking the money from the safe, the man reportedly left the store with the two women.

An employee told police that earlier in the day the store had to call its alarm company about a faulty alarm. A representative from the alarm company was in the store when the theft took place.

The investigation has been turned over to detectives.

They've been advertising on every job site known to man for the past two years for a Loss Prevention Detective. Maybe they should actually hire one. That publicity probably doesn't help either..

richardcranium, if this were premeditated, I would think that the women gave false names when they talked to the HR rep. But, then again, given sub-par the level of intelligence we have seen with the criminal in this community, they might not have though about the possible ramifications of giving the store their names, addresses, phone numbers, SSNs, DOBs, and signed authorizations for a background check.

I agree with watchandlearn, it seems like an inside job. They could have given a fake name when they applied.

I'm guessing that the two women gave names when they applied for work. This investigation ought to finish-up quickly.
