The Women of W.O.R.T.H., Inc. clinic of Rome has received a grant award in the amount of $42,000 from the Georgia Baptist Health Care Ministry Foundation. The grant will support the clinic’s cervical cancer screening project and allow the clinic to expand its clinic hours. The W.O.R.T.H. clinic is Rome’s only non-profit women’s health care clinic. The clinic provides gynecological care at affordable rates to women of northwest Georgia. In 2011, W.O.R.T.H. saw more than 600 patients; the patient volume is expected to double in 2012 with the assistance of the Georgia Baptist grant.

In addition, W.O.R.T.H. recently received a new equipment donation from Welch-Allyn valued at over $6,000. New vital signs monitors, lighting sources and disposable equipment will assist the clinic in its efforts to provide affordable health care. The clinic also received a $1,000 grant from the Vanguard charitable foundation and a generous donation from the Rome Strykers motorcycle club. These funds will allow W.O.R.T.H. to fund its next free Pap smear screening day for uninsured women who could not otherwise afford preventive health screening. The funds will also allow the clinic to perform colposcopy and biopsies for women who are screened and found to have abnormal Pap smears.

W.O.R.T.H.’s next free Pap smear screening day is April 28th. The clinic will give priority to uninsured low-income women who have not had a Pap smear in the last three years. Appointments are required. The clinic is located at 1513 Dean St in Rome and may be reached at (706) 232-3408 or at info@womenareworthit.org. W.O.R.T.H.’s new office hours are Thursday and Friday from 10:00 to 5:00 and Saturdays from noon to 5:00.

My daughter has volunteered with this women's clinic and I hear nothing but "goodness" when she speaks of their work. The Nurse Preactitioner that started the clinic is very excited about the health education and diagnostic help they offer as well as routine preventive health gyn services. It's a shame for folks to make false claims or not verify data before drawing conclusions. We need more funding applied to women's health care rather than less. This clinic is available to many who are underinsured or unemployed fully. I have to admit it bugs me that kind folks would even consider withdrawing access to healthcare. I thought this war on women thing was a stretch but this gives me pause. I hope its simply an over reaction to misinformation.

Too often clinicians are faced with the healthcare needs of uninsured patients seeking non-emergent care such as breast cancer screenings, annual cervical cancer screenings (pap smears) and contraception. Women of Worth (W.O. R. T. H.) has helped to meet the needs of many of these women and their families. I applaud the generous donation of the Georgia Baptist Health Care Ministry Foundation to allow W.O. R. T. H. to serve Rome’s women and their families. Please continue this meaningful community service work.

I was elated to discover that the W.O.R.T.H. clinic is receiving this type of grant. Serving as Rome's sole non-profit women's health care provider it's imperative that we value and nourish this organization. My wish is that the people of Rome may cheer on the continuance of their mission as they are answering a calling that serves not only our community as a whole, but more specifically the health of the women and by extension our children. I strongly believe and support the work of the W.O.R.T.H. clinic and hope this type of grant is only the beginning for the funding W.O.R.T.H will see. We are only as good as our health care and without clinics such as this one we cannot expect to thrive as a community. It is necessary to ever acknowledge the importance of the work they do for the sake of human health. A happy heart, sound body and vibrant life begin with health- may we all aid in promoting the work that will allow each and every person equal opportunity to these innate human rights.

The support from the Baptist community in Rome for the Women of W.O.R.T.H., Inc. clinic to provide cancer prevention services to women who so desperately need affordable preventive care has been a gift from God.

During the free Pap screening days to screen for Cervical cancer funded by the Georgia Baptist Healthcare Ministry Foundation, the Junior Service League of Rome, and the Tillotson-Menlo Foundation, Women of W.O.R.T.H., Inc. found 5 cases of cancer or pre-cancer. Fortunately, W.O.R.T.H. found these cancers and pre-cancers early enough that the women could get procedures and treatments to prevent the spread of the disease. In each one of these instances, the women had not been screened for Cervical cancer in over 15 years because they could not afford the screening. Women of W.O.R.T.H.'s services, funded by these organizations and supported by the community, saved the lives of 5 women.

Thank you for your ongoing support of Women of W.O.R.T.H., Inc. Our next free Pap screening day, funded by the Georgia Baptist Healthcare Ministry Foundation will be on April 28th. If you would like to make an appointment, please call (706) 232-3408 (appointments are necessary).

I really appreciate the work that the Baptist's are doing to help Women! They are really making a difference in a lot of lives here in GA. I know someone who had to use the clinics services, and because she received the care that she needed, they where able to detect a cancerous growth early. I truly believe that without the Baptist community supporting services for women, she would have never been diagnosed early. For that, we all thank you!

@EastRoman-Thanks for the comments. It is so true and so unfortunate that women in northwest Georgia cannot afford even preventive cancer screenings. That is why our cervical cancer rates are so high-- see this Press release we sent out last month http://alturl.com/n4oks Since receiving the GBHCF grant we have screened so many more women and referred two women that need immediate treatment for severe abnormalities.

So proud of the Georgia Baptist Health Care Ministry Foundation for contributing to this important health care effort! Too many women in our community are losing their lives and suffering from diseases that are preventable if detected early. Thanks to the generosity of the GBHCMF many women will have healthier, more blessed lives! This is a terrific way for this group to put the words of Jesus into action!!
