One person was killed, one person was charged with second-degree vehicular homicide and one person was charged with DUI following a four-vehicle wreck that occurred on Shorter Avenue at about 9 p.m. on Friday night.

Deputy Coroner Ernie Studard said David Shaun Lary, 25, was pronounced dead at Floyd Medical Center Emergency Room at 9:35 p.m.

Lt. John Black of the Rome Police Department said Lary, of a Westpoint Drive address in Lindale, was driving an orange and black Dodge Omni at the time of the wreck.

According to Black:

Maria Fonseca, 30, of a Homestead Circle address, pulled out of Paris Drive onto Shorter Avenue in her white Dodge Stratus while Taylor Chastain, 30, of Rome, was heading east on Shorter Avenue in his black Ford F-150 4x4.

Chastain struck Fonseca and the impact caused the Stratus to hit Lary's Omni, and Chastain drove over both the Stratus and the Omni. He then flipped multiple times, hitting a two-door black Ford F-150 driven by Denise Lawrence of Summerville, and his 4x4 came to rest in front of the Dairy Queen.

First responders had to cut away the roof of the Omni to remove Lary from that vehicle. He was taken to FMC but died at the hospital.

Chastain and Fonseca were taken to FMC with injuries.

Black said Fonseca was charged with second-degree vehicular homicide, driving without a license and failure to yield right of way.

Lawrence was charged with DUI.

All four lanes of Shorter Avenue were closed from 9 p.m. until 10:30 p.m. while police and emergency responders cleared the wreck debris.
