City Hall officials received complaints on Sunday after several locals found parking tickets tucked under their car windshields for parking in the wrong direction.

Assistant City Manager Sammy Rich said after hearing such complaints, he called Rome Police Chief Elaine Snow regarding the issue.

“She said she didn’t know the specifics, but that she thought about nine citations had been issued,” he said.

Rich said he was told the issue of illegal parking had been brought up at the last police roll call meeting, sparking the new emphasis on issuing parking citations. No particular area in the city has been specifically targeted, he said.

Deputy Chief Lonzo Roberson said that when drivers park along a curb, the vehicle should be facing in the same direction traffic flows on that side of the street. He said he was unaware of the citations but he would check into it today.

Tracy Page, a resident on Fifth Avenue, said she was startled when she walked to her husband’s car on Sunday morning and saw a $15 ticket for having parked facing the wrong direction.

Page said both she and her husband had parked in that direction before, and in the six years her family had lived in their home, this was the first time they had ever been given such a citation.

“My problem is that if you are going to change your enforcement policy, then let people know,” she said. “I’ve parked in front of our house as City of Rome police cars pass me and all I’ve ever received in the past is a friendly wave.”

Page said she did not think cars parked on the sides of her street pose any safety issues.

“We live on a really wide avenue,” Page said, “You can actually park (on) both sides of the street and traffic can flow through.”

Chief Snow could not be reached for comment by the Rome News-Tribune on Sunday.

Face it people. A law is a law. Perhaps the city is getting stricter for more revenue. So what? DON'T DO STUPID THINGS AND YOU WON'T GET STUPID FINES.

I wish there was a way I could post the photo I have on my cell phone of the RPD motorcycle parked in the handicapped parking space at Applebees. It would be PERFECT for this article.

Chief Snow, Sammy Rich, Assistant City Manager, Deputy Chief Lonzo Robertson my husband and I had only been in Rome maybe 1 1/2 to 2 years when I parked on first Street in front of the Administration building for no more than 5 minutes to take something to my husband at his office. I parked going up the street instead of down the street. I got a ticket in that short time. I HAD TO PAY THE $15 OR ELSE. It is really dangerous on 3rd Avenue, 4th Avenue and 5th Avenue because people will not park their cars in their driveway. Cars parked going both directions. It is really dangerous when the primary school on Dean Street is getting out. All the parents coming to pick up children and the street blocked all the way down to the red light on Dean Street. Speaking of Dean Street it is an accident waiting to happen.

By all means enforce the parking tickets!!!!!

If the fine is levied because the behavior might cause an accident, then whey don't we all just pay the $15 once a year because we might at some time in the year park our car in the wrong direction in a parking spot. It's called a tax.

Ohe safety features required of all cars on the road is red reflector built into the tail lamp lenses so cars approaching from the rear can see the parked car at night. There are no red reflectors on the front of your car, and everyone that parks that way should get a citiation every time, no exceptions, and that includes the fine officer that lives on Eden Dr NW that for years has allowed his family and guest to park facing the wrong direction plus too close to the intersection of another street.

Most drivers are not familiar with the traffic laws. It makes me wonder why some are allowed to have a drivers license. If you do not know the laws then maybe you should get a copy of them and read instead of complaining. Also in that book you will see where slower traffic must use the right lane. You can not get anywhere on 27 north because people creep along in the left lane and there are signs on the road that say keep in the right lane. I wish the police would go out and write some tickets there.

Don't think it has a lot to do with the street being wide enough. The problem occurs when you exit the parking spot and have to make a u turn or cross over the wrong lane of travel to get going in the right direction. At least that is what the Savannah meter maids told me last year when they ticketed me near River St. I don't know if this is a new law for Rome or just one that was not being enforced. Regardless, I do think the po po should have put something out to make the public aware. Of course they would have to use little bitty words because a lot of folks in the town still can't grasp what "right lane ends" means.

Don't like the law? Lobby to change it.

Or, run for the Georgia House and then change it.

Or, just moan and groan about that which you can't change (the police doing their job of enforcing laws, good and bad) or

You can actually do something to change the law.

I've got my money on moaning and groaning.

Only $15? In Atlanta, they'd tow your car. If you're lucky you'll be able to find out who towed your car and where they put it.

Don't get me wrong, the Rome/Floyd police are terrible, but this is not the reason. I can forgive them for a $15 parking fine. These are the policemen that will take you to jail for sitting on a public bench after dark.

You are correct... I didn't realize other people have been arrested for sitting on a bench too... It's apparently a big problem in Rome, haha..

Driving 101... always park with the flow of traffic. On the other hand, a warning first probably would have been a nicer option if she has been doing it for years.

Cops are just as bad as everybody else when it comes to traffic laws. I've watched them roll through stop signs lots of times, illegal u turns, etc. But whose's going to give them a ticket? "Citizen's Arrest, Citizen's Arrest".

Why don't the police enforce those parking ordinances around the downtown churches on Sunday morning. There are no telling how many cars around the Episcopal, Baptist, Presbyterian and Methodist churches parked the wrong way, parked on yellow curbs and parked near fire hydrants. Is it because city officials are members of those churches?

Ms. Page should enclose a note with her check. She should express gratitude for the numerous times she parked illegally and not written a citation. The economy is tough. Local, state and federal governments are grabbing for every dollar possible. Nothing personal, just business.

If you don't wanna pay a simple $15 ticket, then learn the laws and don't break or try to bend them. Simple as that.

Plus, I'm sure there was no "enforcement policy" changed, but beings that it was brought up in their roll call meeting, another citizen's complaint in the area probably spurred the officers to write these tickets and ramp up enforcement there.

Georgia Code

§ 40-6-200. How vehicles to be parked; powers of Department of Transportation and local authorities

(a) Except as otherwise provided in this Code section, every vehicle stopped or parked upon a two-way roadway shall be stopped or parked with the right-hand wheels parallel to and within 12 inches of the right-hand curb or as close as practicable to the right edge of the right-hand shoulder.

(b) Except when otherwise provided by local ordinance, every vehicle stopped or parked upon a one-way roadway shall be stopped or parked parallel to the curb or edge of the roadway, in the direction of authorized traffic movement, with its right-hand wheels within 12 inches of the right-hand curb or as close as practicable to the right edge of the right-hand shoulder or with its left-hand wheels within 12 inches of the left-hand curb or as close as practicable to the left edge of the left-hand shoulder.

(c) Local authorities may by ordinance permit angle parking on any roadway, except that angle parking shall not be permitted on any federal-aid or state highway unless the Department of Transportation has determined that the roadway is of sufficient width to permit angle parking without interfering with the free movement of traffic.

(d) The department, with respect to highways under its jurisdiction, may place signs prohibiting, restricting, or limiting the stopping, standing, or parking of vehicles on any highway where, in its opinion, as evidenced by resolution or order entered in its minutes, such stopping, standing, or parking is dangerous to those using the highway or where the stopping, standing, or parking of vehicles would unduly interfere with the free movement of traffic thereon. Such signs shall be official signs, and no person shall stop, stand, or park any vehicle in violation of the restrictions on such signs.

Just proves a point that most people in Rome shouldn't be driving!!! If you don't know the laws of the road then don't be surprised when you get a ticket or even worse in an accident!

Every decent sized city in the united states requires you to park in the direction of traffic and tickets you if you don't. It was shocking Rome allowed this for so long. It may be your home, it's not your street.

They don't make the laws. They are sworn to an oath of office to enforce them. Have you ever heard of violation of their oath of office. It is a felony.

This is almost as ridiculous as having to ask the Sheriff for permission to hold a raffle. I wonder who one asks for permission to park in the direction they choose in front of their home.

There isn't anyone you can ask for permission to park the way you please when the law describes the way you MUST park.

It's about time the cops in Rome enforced this law. Parking beside the curb here is a mess, in general.
