Northern Georgia Logistics, a subsidiary of Findlay’s Tall Timbers Distribution, has opened in a portion of the old Mohawk distribution center on Burlington Drive in the Shannon community.

The firm is a third-party logistics provider — primarily warehousing — and distribution center that also provides freight services.

According to a statement from company headquarters in Findlay, Ohio, Findlay’s Tall Timber Distribution is one of the largest privately-held logistics companies in the Midwest.

Charles Bills, president of Findlay’s, said the company has taken 250,000 square feet, basically half of the old Mohawk property, which the Ball Corporation had previously announced that it was moving into. Rick Aurand, human resources manager for Findlay’s said it was Ball Corp. that introduced the firm to the Rome area and that Northern Georgia Logistics was operating the warehousing operation on behalf of Ball, it’s primary customer in the Rome area.

“Most of our growth came from our customers who are so satisfied with us, say in Findlay, that when they have a location elsewhere around the nation, they say, hey, would you come down here,” Aurand said. “Our business with Ball brought us to Rome but we’ve already got several clients knocking on the door and we’re in talks with several others.”

Aurand said he expects the warehousing facility to employ about 25 people in the short term, but he does anticipate growth in the southernmost of the warehousing operation.

Findlay’s Tall Timbers Distribution operates approximately 6 million square feet of warehouse space in 19 locations in Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania, New York, Wisconsin, Kentucky and, now, in Georgia.

“We ship nationwide, but our customer base and our focus right now is east of the Mississippi,” Aurand said.
