Harbin Clinic Medical Oncologist, Dr. Melissa Dillmon, recently co-authored an article for American Society of Clinical Oncology’s (ASCO) Journal of Oncology Practice.

Dr. Dillmon’s article, “Clinical Practice Guidelines for Cancer Care: Utilization and Expectations of the Practicing Oncologist”, has been published online and will be in the Journal of Oncology Practice’s next issue.

Dr. Dillmon, along with her co-authors, suggests changes in the scope of ASCO guidelines for cancer care in order to improve the process. These changes include:

  • Establishing disease-specific committees composed of context experts
  • Improving methods to resolve conflicts of interest
  • Simplifying steps to engage members to suggest topics for new guidelines
  • Linking guidelines utilization with quality indices
The article goes on to say that with major revisions to guideline development, ASCO can play a pivotal role in patient care.

Dr. Dillmon completed her medical doctorate degree at Wake Forest University in Winston- Salem, NC.

She completed her residency at the University of Alabama in Birmingham, AL. She was fellowship trained in Hematology and Oncology at the Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Alabama. Dr. Dillmon is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology. She is a member the American

College of Physicians-Society of Internal Medicine and the American Society of Clinical Oncology. Dr. Dillmon is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the Georgia Society of Clinical Oncology where she also serves on the executive board. She was also selected as an ASCO Leadership Development participant for 2010-2011.
