On the second day of competition, Berry’s women’s golf team is 12 out of 14 teams after a score of 344 at the Division III Preview at Baytowne Golf Club. Senior Lacey Sheppard led Berry with a score of 72--her career low round.

The Vikings trail 11th place Oglethorpe by three strokes. Junior Nikki Cline notched an 88 while sophomore Nicole Wood shot a 92. Sophomores Chelsea Hoag and Lauren Buschhorn finished at 92 and 96 respectively.

Mary Hardin Baylor continues to lead the field. They have a two-day 615 — eight strokes ahead of Methodist. The Monarchs fired the best team score (306) of the day.

Individually, MHB’s Taylor O’Rear has a one shot lead heading to Tuesday with a 149.

The event’s third and final day will take place today.

Shorter has strong showing against top schools

Shorter University’s cross country teams turned in solid results at this weekend’s Crimson Classic hosted by the University of Alabama. The race, which serves as a final tune up before the Gulf South Conference Cross Country Championships, featured several teams from division 1 schools, including host school Alabama, Auburn and Tennessee.

Shea Spicher once again led the ladies. Her 31st place individual finish paced the team to a 13th place team finish, beating out Conference foe North Alabama.

First-year coach Martin Hernandez was happy with the results.

“It’s a pretty tough course, but I think the girls did a good job, especially considering I don’t think there were many non D1 schools there,” said Hernandez.

The men had two very bright spots on the day, as Daniel Sorenson finished 8th and Carlos Perez finished 19th.

“Today’s meet was not about times it was really about competing and racing some good DI schools,” said Hernandez. “Daniel ran well came out conservative and moved all the way to a top eight finish. Carlos was not too far behind. The two were very excited about the race and beat a lot of good guys they have never beaten before.”

Next for the Hawks will be their first ever trip to the Gulf South Conference Championships. The races begin Oct. 20 at 10 a.m.
