Local college roundup: Lady Hawks take golf tourney

TUNICA, Miss - With Pauline Schopp atop the scoring sheet for Shorter, the Lady Hawks were able to lay claim to the title at The Buccaneer hosted by Christian Brothers University.

Schopp (75-73-148) claimed the individual championship.

Maria Bengtsson (76-78-154) and Isabella Baldacci (81-78-159) finished second and third overall to give the Lady Hawks the top-3 finishers.

Rounding out the Lady Hawks championship team was Rachel Butler (84-82-166) in fifth and Claudia Orrantia (91-80-171) finishing eighth as they shot a two-day total 625.

This match served as a tune up for the NCCAA Championships to take place next week in Panama City Beach, Florida.

The championship events begin on Sunday with practice rounds and the Tee-Off Banquet sponsored by the Panama City CVB & Sports Commission. Competition begins on Monday at The Hombre Golf Club in Panama City Beach, Fla., with the 36-hole Women’s Invitational concluding on Tuesday and the Men’s Championship concluding on Wednesday.

Berry women’s golf

Sandestin, Fla. — The Berry College women’s golf team finished play on Tuesday at the Golfweek Division III Preview. The Vikings shot a third round score of 347 and moved up one spot to finish 11th. Lacey Sheppard paced BC with a total score of 242 and a 14th place finish.

Sheppard shot rounds of 87, 72 and 83 at the Baytowne Golf Club. The senior carded the best two individual Berry scores. BC’s 347 score allowed it to leap-frog Oglethorpe, which recorded a 363 on Tuesday.

Methodist shot an impressive 299 today and its 922 total score won the team event. The Monarchs trailed Mary Hardin Baylor by eight strokes this morning. MHB fired a 328 Tuesday and finished six shots behind Methodist.

Tyler O’Neal of MHB and MU’s Loretta Giovannettone tied after the 54 holes with 225 tallies.

Other Berry scores were: Nikki Cline (91-88-85--264), T50; 55th, Chelsea Hoag (87-92-89--268, 55th); Nicole Wood (89-92-90--271), 57th; Lauren Buschhorn, (98-96-99--293), 64th.

The Vikings do not play another match this fall. Berry returns to competitive play on March 4 at the Rome News Tribune Invitational.

Shorter men’s golf

TUNICA, Miss. — Patric Sundlof shot two rounds under par to lead the Hawks golf team past Christian Brothers.

Sundlof (70-69-139) was the over leader of the match between the two schools. Ethan Lambert (69-72-141) also finished below par for the two-day event. The Hawks shot an impressive two day total of 581 at the par 72 Tunica National.

Juan Giraldo (75-69-144) rebounded on Day Two, shooting a 3-under 69, to finish even par for the event.

Gabriel Cassinelli (76-85-161) and Jordan Bethune (78-83-161) rounded out the team with identical two-day scores.

Mitchell Bennett (76-70-146) was the only CBU golfer to break par when he shot 70 on the second round. The Buccaneers finished with a score of 624.
