For new mothers, every single decision regarding your child is crucial and can seem daunting, especially when it comes to their education.

With so many reputable schools in Rome and Floyd County, it can be overwhelmingly stressful to pick and choose where your child should go.

To help local mothers with these decisions, Mothers of Preschoolers, an international organization with a local charter, will host a Preschool and Kindergarten Fair on Nov. 1 in King Hall at First Presbyterian Church from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Representatives from the Berry schools, the Darlington Schools, First Baptist Church, First Presbyterian Church, Floyd County Schools, Rome First, Unity Christian Schools, PALS, Montessori School of Rome, Providence Prep and Saint Mary’s will be present at the fair.

MOPS meets the first and third Thursday of each month from September to May. Jessica Jackson, co-coordinator of MOPS, said the idea came up at one of the meetings.

“Basically, one of the things we talk about most at MOPS, and it’s a very stressful topic of conversation, is where are we going to send our kids to school when that time comes?” Jackson said. “Where are we going to go to preschool? Where are we going to go to kindergarten?”

Jackson and co-coordinator Kirsten McClain developed the idea for the fair and also wanted to invite the public.

“Most of the schools in the area are going to be there anyway, we thought, why not go ahead and try to help the schools, make it worth their while … to benefit the community?” she said. “Any other moms out there who are struggling with this decision can just come to one place, get the paperwork, find out about deadlines and scholarship applications and how to register for the lottery program with the public schools.”

MOPS, she said, is a great organization for new moms to join, and offers a variety of services.

“We organize play dates, exercise groups, family nights and seasonal activities in addition to our regular meetings,” Jackson said. “It’s a time for mothers to get together and discuss child care, there’s breakfast provided, they get to meet and connect with other moms in the area and then we have inspirational speakers and community service opportunities that we do.”

Also, it’s an opportunity for new mothers to get out and meet other moms, she said. “People who have little kids and are staying at home with them and are just going crazy at home, that’s who we seek to encourage and get connected,” said Jackson.

Jackson said any questions about MOPS and the Preschool and Kindergarten Fair can be emailed to her at jessicajRN@yahoo.com.

“We hope that this will be a benefit to the community,” she said. “We invite any mom out there that is kind of thinking about preschool, kindergarten and elementary school, we invite them to come and check out all the great options that Rome has to offer.”
