Lake Winnepesaukah Amusement Park officials announced Wednesday that they look to add a 5-acre water park addition to its venue by next summer.

The new multi-million dollar expansion is expected to feature a lazy river, wave lagoon, flume body slides, enclosed tube slides, and a splash park for toddlers.

"We have looked for the right opportunity to expand Lake Winnie and give our guests even more reasons to come back and more ways to have fun," said Talley Green, public relations director. "It's a very exciting day for the park and for the community in both Chattanooga and Catoosa County."

The expansion, which is slated to begin this winter with the hopes of being open by Memorial Day, will take place on the west side of the park near the famous Cannonball Roller coaster.

Georgia Sen. Jeff Mullis of Chickamauga said the new endeavor will not only enhance one of the community’s most popular sites, but would also provide an economic boost for the area.

"Economically it's great," Mullis said. "Many families have been coming here for generations, and some people even met their significant others here. It's a great way to enhance the park's entertainment value. It's a great place to come for safe, wholesome family fun."
