In the lore of that age, Valhalla was the splendid palace (sort of a heaven) where slain warriors went to live with Odin (king of the gods), feast on a boar (sort of pulled pork, one assumes) and drink alcohol flowing from the udders of a goat (there’s almost always a goat on the label of a bottle of bock beer).
The fallen but revived warriors then spent each day fighting each other (footballs are not mention in the ancient tales) with those slain anew reviving every evening to eat, drink and be merry until they got a chance to fight again the next day.
Frankly, when starting a football program for the first time (NCAA Division III, first game ever next year) there’s probably some Berry College fan base expectation of “being killed” at the beginning. However, the only way to get to Valhalla for the Vikings of old was to lose … and once there one had to keep right on losing, although it seems like there was a lot of fun along the way.
Oh, what the heck. Valhalla it is. Just too good to pass up.
