While employees of the Cartersville Kmart, 435 East Main Street, were notified last week that their store would be shut-ting down in January, the Rome store is still going strong.

Rome Kmart General Manager Mike Barger confirmed that the Cartersville store was closing in about three months. The Cartersville store is not renewing its lease with the property owner in March and Sears Holding, the parent corporation for both Sears and Kmart made the decision to go ahead and close toward the end of January.

The shutdown in Cartersville will impact approximately 70 employees, many of whom are employed on a part-time basis. Some of the displaced employees at the Cartersville location will be offered a severance package and some will have an opportunity to move to other stores.

Barger said that several employees of the Bartow store had already made contact with the Rome store about possibly transferring to the Hicks Drive location in Rome.
