The reports detail spending and donations through Oct. 25, although only lump sums of $100 or more must be listed separately. The next reports are due Dec. 31.
Here’s a look at some of the money behind the contested races in Tuesday’s election:
Floyd County Commission Post 2
Democrat Gary D. Harrell is challenging incumbent Republican Garry Fricks.
Fricks’ report shows spending of $1,440 and a balance of $1,451 in his campaign chest. Harrell spent $725, had $85 in the bank and $400 in outstanding debt, according to his report.
The biggest boost for Fricks was a $1,000 contribution from the Georgia Alliance of Community Hospitals.
Other donors included Floyd Medical Center administrators Kurt Stuenkel, Dan Sweitzer, Warren Rigas and Greg Polley, FMC attorney Wade Monk and physicians Dan Hanks and Joseph Biuso. Harrell’s funding came through small individual donations that didn’t reach the level where itemization is required.
Floyd County Commission Post 3
Democrat Rick Garrett is running against incumbent Republican Irwin Bagwell.
While Bagwell’s report indicates he’s spent more than $24,000 on his campaign, a review shows that’s a carry-over from his original 2008 bid for office. Spending this year appears to have been less than $500.
Garrett says he hasn’t spent anything or received donations. He contends he has filed his reports, but the Georgia Government Transparency and Campaign Finance Commission lists him as owing fines for noncompliance.
Bagwell reported $2,672 remaining in his campaign chest. Major donations this year came from the Floyd County Republican Party and local residents Marilyn Montgomery, Cecil Burk, Tom Saltino, Curtis Doyle, Charles Williams and Earl Tillman.
Floyd County Sheriff
Republican Cary Cooper is trying to unseat incumbent Democrat Tim Burkhalter.
Cooper reported spending $848 on his campaign, although a review of earlier reports shows expenses totaling $6,881 weren’t carried over from previous reports for this campaign cycle.
Burkhalter reported spending $37,131 this cycle and a cash balance of $27,755. His financials were filed by the Oct. 25 due date and reported in a Rome News-Tribune article last month.
Cooper reported no contributions for the one-month period covered by the latest report.
Floyd County Clerk of Court
Republican Mark McAllister is battling incumbent Democrat Barbara Penson for the seat.
McAllister, who filed by Oct. 25, reported $3,992 in expenses, a cash balance of $631 and $2,200 in campaign debt.
Penson’s report shows spending of $5,166, a cash balance of $1,414 and $2,695 in debt.
Her major donors this period include attorneys Bob Finnell, Ronald Patton and Bobby Lee Cook, former state legislator Buddy Childers and residents Nellie Melton, Bob Puckett and George and Ann Pullen.
State House District 12
Republican Eddie Lumsden is challenging incumbent Democrat Barbara Massey Reece for the seat that represents all of Chattooga and western Floyd counties.
Lumsden’s filing, reported in an Oct. 29 newspaper article, showed expenses of more than $55,000 and numerous donations from Republican state lawmakers.
Reece reported spending $47,114 and a cash balance of $14,288.
Among her major donors this period were the Georgia Association of Educators, the Warshauer Law Group and attorneys Bobby Lee Cook and Hubert Hamilton, the Chattooga County Democratic Party and Anna Marie and Jeremy Braden.
