DECATUR, Ga. (AP) — Authorities say a school system near Atlanta, already struggling with severe financial woes, now has to repay the federal government more than $900,000 in grant money.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that an audit found that the money had been misspent by the DeKalb County School District, though no fraud is alleged.

A state report says the school system spent the money in ways that are not allowed under guidelines of the federal Title 1 program. The program subsidizes schools with concentrations of students from low-income households.

School system officials say they plan to reimburse the federal government $910,000, though they did not say when or how.

The district, whose annual operating budget is about $730 million, is still reeling from more than $78 million in cuts in June.
