The Rome-Floyd Recycling Center will host its bimonthly electronics recycling day, while Marta Turner will be on hand to accept donations for Soles4Souls.
The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the center on Watters Street.
Officer Tom Benefield with the Rome-Floyd Recycling Center said people must call in order to set up an appointment to bring in their household electronics. The number is 706-291-5266.
The center sets up appointments in 15-minute increments in order to avoid traffic problems and long wait times.
Benefield said they will accept anything from computers to alarm clocks, but televisions will only be accepted from residences.
“If you have concerns about the information on your hard drive, I would suggest removing it and destroying it before bringing it because we won’t do that,” Benefield said.
Marta Turner is the local volunteer organizer for Soles4Souls and is excited about getting the word out to people to bring their old shoes along with their old electronics.
“Keeping shoes out of the landfill is important environmentally, but probably more important socially,” Turner said.
She encourages people to bring anything from bedroom slippers to work boots to everything in between, no matter their condition.
The Alliance Rubber Company chose to help support Turner’s efforts and have donated rubber bands to help sort the shoes before shipping them.
“I’m thrilled with their generosity,” Turner said. “That is an expense and it was very nice of them to help out.”
Turner also has permanent collection bins set up around town for people who are not planning to come to the electronics recycling event Saturday.
Drop-off spots include the Rome-Floyd County Library, Rome-Floyd County YMCA, Habitat for Humanity ReStore and River City Bank.
